The courage to change

The serenity prayer says, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” It’s easy to hide behind the “acceptance of things I cannot change” part of the prayer.  We hear it all the time: “I have to learn to accept everything, now that I’m in recovery.” Or, “I must learn to accept people, places, and things.” But the prayer also states we need the courage to “change the things we can.”  Some things, such as mediocrity, lack of prosperity, fear, and limitation are unacceptable to me. The Creator of the heavens and the earth and gives me the strength to stay clean and sober.  He can certainly give me the courage to improve and change everything else in my life.  This is where wisdom becomes necessary.  Wisdom is needed to avoid the pitfalls of self-justification and an ego driven life. It takes wisdom to be guided safely through the process. That is where a sponsor, teacher, or spiritual guide is of extreme value. Show some backbone and courage. Help change yourself and our world for the better. Show the courage to open your mind to a new level of possibility. Have the courage to change the things you can. www.fullrecoverywellnesscenter.com.

  1. The “3 steps” of the serenity prayer are in a divine order for this alcoholic. When thoroughly followed the gift of an open mind is the direct result. The first step of the serenity prayer asks God. From the get go a conscience contact is developed with a power that is understood to be greater. But this is contingent upon me doing some action step . The word grant is contingent on me doing something to get to the much needed acceptance . The acceptance will flow into a serenity if I am willing to let go of self. Asking a power that is greater creates this relationship. As always I must take the action step. Years of defective thinking has left the next right thing at the alter as my intentions never materialized into action . God is infinite. Knowing that God is infinite humbles me to accept that I am finite.
The flow brings me to to the courage . The courage is still asked that it be granted. The courage is gifted as serenity is in place. From God the serenity to accept what I can not change has granted courage to change what I can. Remembering that God is infinite. Serenity and courage will flow into a wisdom. The gift will be the realization that I have always had this innate wisdom. Because God has always been doing for me . God has never not been
